Working With Galleries

For more advanced gallery features, there are multiple ways to upload and manage images depending on what system you’re using.

NextGen Galley

You can tell if you’re using NextGen Gallery based on the appearance of a Gallery section in the dashboard menu (near the bottom). The following video provides a good overview.

To create galleries:

1) Click on Gallery > Add Gallery/Images
2) Click on the Add Gallery tab and give your gallery a name.
3) Copy the shortcode that appears in the confirmation message at the top (looks like “[ nggallery id=4 ]” — include the brackets.
4) Create a new page or post to host your gallery.
5) Paste the shortcode into the page/post body content.

To add new images to any gallery:

1) Click on Gallery > Add Gallery/Images
2) Use the Upload Images tab (default), select images to upload. Select the gallery to upload to (Portfolio galleries are already set up).
3) In most cases, I advise checking the ” Scale images to max width 800px or max height 600px” box.
4) Click Upload and let it process.

To add/edit captions:

1) Click on Gallery > Manage Galleries
2) Select the Gallery to edit.
3) In the “Alt & Title Text / Description,” you’ll see two fields per image. The second field is the captions. Put in your captions here.
3a) OPTIONAL — if you want the caption to be a hyperlink, use basic HTML per this guide.

Justified Image Grid

Justified Image Grid offers a creative way to display images. Images can be pulled from the native WordPress gallery or they can be managed using NextGen Gallery (which can often be easier).

To add a Justified Image Grid gallery to any page:

1) Go to the page/post (or create a new one).
2) Use the Add Media tab and select images to upload.
3) Once the images are uploaded, click Create New Gallery. You will see shortcode in the body text that looks similar to “[ gallery ids=”729,732,731,720″ ]”. The numbers are the IDs for the images.
4) Replace the word “gallery” in the shortcode with “justified_image_grid” — be sure to keep the brackets. Publish or save your page/post and you’re done.

To add a Justified Image Grid gallery with images pulled from NextGen Gallery:

First, you’ll want to create the gallery using the NextGen management system.

1) Click on Gallery > Add Gallery/Images
2) Click on the Add Gallery tab and give your gallery a name.
3) When it finishes, you will see a confirmation message with something that looks like “nggallery id = 4”. Note the ID number.
4) Create a new page or post to host your gallery.
5) Paste the following shortcode into the page/post body content but replace X with your ID number.

[ justified_image_grid ng_gallery=X ]

Note that you’ll want to delete the extra space after the first bracket and before the second bracket. If we’d done that here, then it would actually try to create a gallery rather than display the shortcode.

To add new images to to the gallery through the NextGen system:

1) Click on Gallery > Add Gallery/Images
2) Use the Upload Images tab (default), select images to upload. Select the gallery to upload to (Portfolio galleries are already set up).
3) In most cases, I advise checking the ” Scale images to max width 800px or max height 600px” box.
4) Click Upload and let it process.
